Product Description Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Spain, Portugal is today’s hot-spot vacation destination, and world travelers are enthralled by the unique yet familiar cuisine of this country. The New Portuguese Table takes you on a culinary journey into the soul of this fascinating nation and looks at its 11 surprisingly different historical regions, as well as the island of Madeira and the Azores, and their food culture, typical dishes, and wines. This book also showcases Portugal's pantry of go-to ingredients, such as smoked sausages, peppers, cilantro, seafood, olive oil, garlic, beans, tomatoes, and bay leaves—all beloved by Americans and now combined in innovative ways.
In The New Portuguese Table, David Leite provides a contemporary look at the flavorful food of this gastronomic region, sharing both the beloved classics he remembers from cooking at his grandmother’s side, such as Slowly Simmered White Beans and Sausage, as well as modern dishes defining the country today, like Olive Oil–Poached Fresh Cod with Roasted Tomato Sauce. With full-color photographs throughout and a contemporary perspective, The New Portuguese Table is the handbook to the exciting cuisine of Portugal.

Portuguese cooking from a different point of view.... November 11, 2009 T. Kaminski (Cheverly, MD) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having lived in Brazil for five years and one of several who think that Brazilian food is the best in the world, I was eager to find a cook book that would bring together the cuisine from Brazil's homeland. I was very pleased to find this cook book that adds a modern take to the standard Portuguese fare.
The New Portuguese Table cookbook is excellent. It is written from a point of view of a son of a Portuguese couple that was born in the US and returned to Portugal to find emerging newer versions of the standard Portuguese cuisine. It covers not only the food, but wine of this fine country (and its islands) blended with the cultural settings. The soups are excellent and am looking forward to trying all the meat/seafood dishes included herein.
This is a keeper!!
An Armchair Trip To Portugal September 30, 2009 Michele L. Perry I would highly recommend this cookbook. It is well organized and the photographs are beautiful. I have tried three of the recipes and have been pleased with the results of all three. My husband is Portuguese. We grew up in the same area as the author and, as children, have eaten many of the dishes presented in this book. They have brought back many fond memories. I especially enjoy how the author reviews each region of Portugal and gives recommendations as to which food and beverages are specialties of that region. We plan to visit Portugal in the near future and have found this book very helpful in planning our itinerary of eating and drinking our way across the country.
Portuguese table September 29, 2009 James S. Rutledge We purchased this because we were traveling to Portugal..so we were more aware of what food might be there..and it was..the cook book is written so that all things needed can be purchased in usa..but i still do not care for the salt cod..try the milk mayonnaise..we heard the chef on martha stewart radio so we were aware just what type of book it was.
More than a pretty face September 29, 2009 Mid-50s Hot Mama (Iowa) Beautiful cookbooks and usable cookbooks don't always arrive in the same binding--however, this great new book delivers on its promise of NEW (techniques make some challenging dishes easy) and more than delivers great taste.(the "exciting flavors" in the subtitle rings true!) This not-well-documented cuisine is presented in such a personal and thorough manner; the ingredients are familiar and yet the resulting dishes taste brand new. The headnotes are both useful and moving---I enjoy the author's personal approach to his book. When I made a completely Madeiran menu (the griddle bread, fried cornmeal and beef kebabs) my dinner guests cleaned up every dish! Many of the recipes are very "more than the sum of its parts"---a delicious introduction to cooking Portuguese. Thank you, David Leite, for adding to my repertoire and giving me a fresh appreciation of Portuguese ingredients and flavors. I'll be cooking out of this book all winter long...
When Do We Eat? September 7, 2009 DakJek (Mississauga, ON Canada) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book is more than just a great source for a new spin on Portuguese cooking. Including a culinary overview of the regions in Portugal, basic larder requirements (a Portuguese Pantry), and a brief prolog to each recipe, it is just as informative on how to cook things Portuguese as it is a colourful and comprehensive guide on what to cook.
With attractive photographs and delectable recipes, this book definitely has a lot to offer. For someone who "cooks the basics" to advanced cooks, there is something in here for pretty much anyone who wants to try something special. A shining example is the clear amber Milk Liqueur - Liqor de Leite... exquisite!
