5 out of 5 stars Dive in head first   November 13, 2009
Todd Groves (Santa Monica, CA United States)
I find the only way to learn a program is to dive in head first. And that's what Wes McDermott does in his book "Real World modo". In a very clear format, Wes takes you through all the tools and techniques you need to know to get up and running with modo. Instead of rambling on about various things just to hear my own voice, I'll just end with this. Get the book. If you want to learn an excellent 3D program such as modo, get this book. Simple. Do it. Now.

5 out of 5 stars Cutting Edge Good Training   November 2, 2009

'Real World modo: In the Trenches with modo' is a top notch learning resource for the newest (and best in my opinion) 3D Computer Graphics program. I'd classify the book, by Wes McDermott, as Intermediate Level Training, in the context of student entry level, but in terms of its depth, it goes right off the scale, into training the student in becoming a real 3D artist. Not that it's too deep for a beginner, so long as one does not assume it will teach you basic modeling. Dan Ablans modo 401 training is best for that level of training, or even his 301 book, but I wish this book had been on the market back when I started. It is a joy to read, from cover to cover, even without doing the exercises. One becomes consciously aware of the expansion of one's own consciousness, as concepts become crystal clear, and integrate with other wider concepts, making them ripe for experimentation. Nor is this book a one shot deal, where you go through it once, then put it on a shelf and let it gather dust. This is one of those books that will get very dog eared from heavy usage and many re-reads, each reading imparting some new idea.

Purchase of the book gains the user access to Wes McDermotts web site, where there is a seemingly endless volume of supplemental material, videos and tutorials, to download.

A prize at twice the price.

4 out of 5 stars Good companion to other training materials   October 26, 2009

It's not the "definitive guide" style book and you should not treat it as the only resource to master modo. Although there are some "point and click" explanations where necessary, most of the book consists of valuable advices and insights. Subject scope is wide enough to fit most real world scenarios. I rate it four stars as I think It would be a bit more interesting if the book was "project based" (I mean working on one complex project from start to finish). Together with the book you get access to accompying video materials that boost book's educational value. I'm happy to have it on my bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Best Lesson Book Ever Written   October 20, 2009
James P. Berton (Bessemer, MI USA)
This has to be the best lesson book ever written! Wes explains his tools and techniques like no other. This is the type of book I go nuts over. It's not a project based "paint by number" tutorial book aimed to the "3d clueless" that requires their hands to be held throughtout a lesson so they can show their mommy their finished project at the end, instead it's an expert sharing his knowledge of hows and whys of his own experiences and techniques. Besides the book being absolutely great....there's over 3 gig of videos that are some of the best i've seen. I've bought a lot of software books and this is the best. On a scale of 1-10, I would rate it about 5,000. This book explains tools and techniques in great detail. If you want to be a Modo Pro, then this book is for you. If you require the "paint by number" type of tutorial book, then this book is not for you.

5 out of 5 stars This book will take you to the next level   October 20, 2009
Paul E. Mccrorey
Real World Modo is an awesome book. I saw so many people on the Luxology forums ([...]) giving rave reviews of this book so I was really excited to get it. I mean these are real CG artists and they were giving it rave reviews. When I got it was definitely wasn't disappointed. I am parked on the rigging character section right now.

This book takes a very practical and reasoned approach from a guy who's in the trenches every day. It also highlights his experience with Maya and how that translates over to Modo.

Let me say that the book is great...5-star. But what is "EVEN BETTER" was the resource site. Wes has put together companion videos with each chapter and some bonus ones in there as well. These aren't 3 min quick tutorials either. They are very detailed descriptions of the particular topic. It's like watching over his shoulder while a master works...priceless.

This is a must for your 3D training material.

Great Job Wes - when is the next book coming out?
