Product Description
This essential guide for intermediate/advanced photographers has now been fully updated for Elements 7.

Bestselling author and Elements guru Philip Andrews turns his expansive knowledge to this powerful application, delivering, once again, a practical approach in a crystal-clear writing style.

For the advanced Elements user, this book offers a standalone guide to advancing knowledge of the software. For those with a little less experience, it works seamlessly in conjunction with Philip's other Elements guide: "Adobe Photoshop Elements 7: A visual introduction to digital photography". Philip expands on the solid foundation delivered by that title to deliver a master-guide that shows you just how powerful this deceptively simple software package can be.

Throughout the book, Philip takes a pro's approach, emphasising a streamlined, non-destructive workflow. Diverse chapters cover the entire spectrum of photographic potential offered by the software, including key areas such as: darkroom techniques, advanced selection techniques, professional retouching, photo restoration, panoramas, collages, RAW processing and printing. Additionally, the content is supplemented by extra great learning tools available on a brand new website including; downloadable resources, and Elements vodcasts.

Essential reading for all photographers using Elements 7.

* Advanced guide to Elements, the natural sequel to the bestselling 'Adobe Photoshop Elements 6'
* Written by Philip Andrews, world-renowned Photoshop elements expert
* Takes a professional approach to this industry-standard software, with a core focus on nondestructive editing throughout

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Book to Go Further   November 19, 2009
TomK1 (Brookeville, MD)
I've used Photoshop in the past and I've always felt like it was a car with 1000 HP just to get groceries to the store. Photoshop Elements has been my choice since it always seemed to be the basically Photoshop without the plugins (and yes, I know that's not an accurate statement).

I'd used Adobe's "Classroom In A Book" and Scott Kelby's "Adobe Photoshop CS3" book so that's my basis of comparison for a Photoshop "how-to" book.

First of all, I should say I work with a variety of Digital Cameras ranging Canon's SLR range, to Panasonic's point and shoots, Canon point and shoot and even Casio; thus the chapter on dealing with RAW files was welcome for use with the SLRs.

Organizationally, the book attempts to quickly run through how to set up your camera to use Elements more successfully. I feel like it's an odd mix of assuming you are a complete beginning and assuming you know quite a bit about digital photography. It's okay, but it's a bit rushed. From there, the book walks you through the basic tools in Elements, including the organizer (which if you read my review of Photoshop elements is something I don't care for).

All of the preliminary portions aside, the real "meat" of this book are the chapters on Image Changes and Darkroom Techniques. Here is where the author takes you on a journey from one end of Elements to the other. I learned all kinds of interesting tips and techniques, including very useful sections on fixing pictures that were either not focused correctly or the exposure was wrong. I found all sort of ideas on how to save those great shots which suffered from "operator error" in the Camera.

My favorite chapter was on making panoramas; I've tried this with little success in the past; this is the chapter that finally allowed me to do what I've trying for some time. Thank you!

A couple of comments about the book overall: This is not a how-to book in the sense that you look up "how to do ABC". It's more of a classroom in a book and thus, it requires a bit more time to learn to do something, but the reward is that you'll learn something about the art of photography in the meantime.

If I have one criticism, the binding on my copy is so tight that it will not lay flat next to your computer as you work through the examples. Every "Perfect Bound" book suffers from this to one extent or the other, but this flaw was annoying enough that I went down to 4 stars. A spiral bound copy would be great, but I'd settle for something that stays open when you lay it down.

There are lots of books on Elements out there. This is one of the better ones.

5 out of 5 stars I finally "get" PS Elements now   November 13, 2009
J. Paulsonn (Ohio)
I'm a long-time Photoshop user, but the design of Photoshop Elements always baffled me, with its modules, three editing modes, and other "simplifying" features that always seemed to get in the way of what I want to do in Photoshop.

That is, until I read this book. Andrews really knows how to teach PS Elements (and much more), and this is about as comprehensive and thorough a treatment as you're going to find. The more I delve into it, the more I'm impressed with this book.

He covers it all, including an excellent treatment of scanning techniques, processing Raw files (confusing to many new digital photographers), dealing with layers and masking, printing techniques, photo restoration, panoramas, web publishing, collages--it's all here, and explained thoroughly with excellent color screenshots.

There are some really anal-retentive features in this book: Andrews numbers each topic with chapter number and topic number, such as "6.08." Not only can you find things easily that way, he provides information in small print concerning which versions of Elements it applies to, the difficulty level, web resources, related techniques (using the numbering system just mentioned), and the menus used. Wow. You can ignore all this data, but it's beautifully cross-referenced if you want it. I'm impressed with the level of detail here. The index is excellent and there's a nice tear-off bookmark of keyboard shortcuts. There is an ancillary web site, but full access entails a $50/year fee.

Though PS Elements 8 is out now, I would not hesitate to buy this book on PSE7 because 95% of what you need to know is right here. In fact, that last sentence sums up my whole review.

4 out of 5 stars Good Manual   November 3, 2009

This book is well written with numerous detailed photos. Right now, it's a little too advanced for a beginner. Practice, practice, practice. There is no "bad" book when learning something new. There are 448 pages to improve myself with Elements 7.

4 out of 5 stars Well-Written, Though Lots of Basics Beyond the Advanced   October 1, 2009

I have been using Photoshop Elements 7 for some time, and love it. Much of it is very intuitive, but for those who want to get more professional (masking, layering techniques etc), there are lots of features which mimic Adobe's full-featured products (CS4 etc, which are much more expensive).

Since I have been using Elements 7 for quite a while, I dont really need a primer; I really do want to advance my capabilities.

So I would recommend this book both for those who really need to "advance" and those who are new to Elements, but who have already gotten comfortable with other photo editing software, and who know how to use basic MS Windows features (or Mac if youre an Apple person, which I'm not).

This book does not come with a learning cd, as do some other products, and I do like the cd's, although there not critical.

PS: Note Adobe will be releasing Elements 8 in about Oct 2009, so potential buyers should keep that in mins when purchasing. I dont know how different v8 will be from v7.

4 out of 5 stars An exhaustive, but helpful, advanced guide   September 23, 2009

4.5 Stars! Most helpful chapters for a Photoshop Elements 7 newbie like me: *Photo Organization and Management; *Professional Retouching; *Making Better Panoramas (we travel and take a number of outdoors photos); and *Photo Restoration (my husband and I have enjoyed touching up digital photos of our antique family portraits - for example, scratch removal, improving clarity, hiding holes and pen marks). I'm looking forward to making use of the "Extending your web abilities" chapter, but I still have too much to learn to try and absorb that section yet. There is a helpful fold-out keyboard shortcut list on the back cover that can be removed from the book and taped to your desk or added to a bulletin board (a longer list of the shortcut keys can be found at pp.431-434). For those who are artistically inclined, there is a lot of information in this book regarding digital photography techniques (see "Darkroom Techniquest on the Desktop" and "Pathways to Editing", however, I'm saving those sections for a rainy day. Frankly, there is so much to learn in this book, I'm likely to still be reviewing various portions come the winter holidays. Fortunately, the information is not cumulative - you may skip about the reference book as you see fit, based upon your needs and your interests, which is how I tackled the book. It has a lot of color diagrams and photos that are very useful to a newbie like me, and I found it easy to read for the most part. I recommend this book for anyone owning a digital camera and Photoshop Elements 7.
