very helpful October 5, 2009 XB (NY, USA) i've read only 2 sections and i must say, this is VERY helpful! i believe everything you need to know is here. its pretty much organized like a textbook but you dont need to read everything to learn what ur looking for. so start with the chapter that most interests you.
Strunk & White for electronic music September 14, 2009 J. mcnalley (Seattle) If you make music, you can't ignore dance music. Snoman has collected style and production notes for the major genres of electronic dance music in one place. The prose gives great technical detail without obfuscation.
Like Strunk & White, Snoman's book is a snapshot in time. Use it to build a foundation, but spend time listening to the music you enjoy. You will find that Snoman provides a solid basis for understanding modern music. You have to put in the effort to go beyond what he teaches and create truly great new music.
really good book at a really awesome deal August 14, 2009 Alexander Cortada this book is well written as you can tell by the way he breaks everything down piece by piece and step by step. really worth it if your an aspiring artist or, like me, just want to brush up on your skills and maybe learn some new tricks. i wish i had more hands, so i can give this book, FOUR THUMBS UP!!!!
Covers more than programming and sequencing June 27, 2009 James Graves (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought a book several years ago called "Electronica Dance Music Programming Secrets." The "Dance Music Manual" is much better.
No book will deliver a formula for you to make music. You will just have to discover that for yourself as you write songs.
The book gives you the information necessary to start you on the songwriting journey.
It has an excellent section on synthesis and creating bass, lead and pad sounds. The section on EQ'ing and mixing is good as well. Effects are covered too. What's excellent is that all these subjects are discussed and explained with electronic music in mind. It saves you having to filter information from other sources designed for bands and non-digital music.
The Music Theory chapter is informative but you will need at least one other book if you really want to get into and understand theory.
The book explains how to create the main genres of electronic music. They are starting points but they are well done.
This book is for people looking for detailed and comprehensive knowledge. The included CD gives you audio examples of material in the book.
It is worth every penny. It is a good as a reference manual and it will save you time in figuring things out.
Seems good so far April 30, 2009 C. Pranke 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I haven't read the whole book yet but it has really good how-to's on the various settings of different effects processors and synth functions. I already have a general knowledge of compressors, effects and synths, but from what I've read so far this book will really help me get to that next level where I can program synths and effects to do exactly what I need them to do. The one think I don't like is that there is a brief section on producing various genre's of dance music, most of which I am not interested in. I would rather he spent more time/space going more in depth on fewer genre's.
