Product Description

On dry land, most organisms are confined to the surface, or at most to altitudes of a hundred meters—the height of the tallest trees. In the oceans, though, living space has both vertical and horizontal dimensions: with an average depth of 3800 meters, the oceans offer 99% of the space on Earth where life can develop. And the deep sea, which has been immersed in total darkness since the dawn of time, occupies 85% of ocean space, forming the planet’s largest habitat. Yet these depths abound with mystery. The deep sea is mostly uncharted—only about 5 percent of the seafloor has been mapped with any reasonable degree of detail—and we know very little about the creatures that call it home. Current estimates about the number of species yet to be found vary between ten and thirty million. The deep sea no longer has anything to prove; it is without doubt Earth’s largest reservoir of life.

Combining the latest scientific discoveries with astonishing color imagery, The Deep takes readers on a voyage into the darkest realms of the ocean. Revealing nature’s oddest and most mesmerizing creatures in crystalline detail, The Deep features more than two hundred color photographs of terrifying sea monsters, living fossils, and ethereal bioluminescent creatures, some photographed here for the very first time. Accompanying these breathtaking photographs are contributions from some of the world’s most respected researchers that examine the biology of deep-sea organisms, the ecology of deep-sea habitats, and the history of deep-sea exploration.

An unforgettable visual and scientific tour of the teeming abyss, The Deep celebrates the incredible diversity of life on Earth and will captivate anyone intrigued by the unseen—and unimaginable—creatures of the deep sea.

5 out of 5 stars Superb book   November 19, 2009
Paul H. Nelson (Boise, ID)
This is my favorite Nature book of all-time. These creatures are so strange, and their lifestyles so out of the ordinary. If someone had gone to another star system and brought back alien life, they would be hard pressed to find something as imaginative and odd as these animals from the deep.

Superb photography, well written articles by experts. But more than just writing about her subject, the author has managed to capture within the book, the fascination and wonder that she feels about discovering The Deep.

5 out of 5 stars Best Gift Ever   October 12, 2009

I got this as a gift from a friend. I spent hours and hours looking at the amazing photos and reading the text, trying to memorize every word. This book is perfection.

4 out of 5 stars Seeing is believing   July 31, 2009

A truly amazing look at life in the watery depths of our magnificent planet. The strange creatures that inhabit the dark underworld of our seas and oceans offer an almost alien-like encounter, yet they are undeniably part of earth's evolutionary process. Words cannot do justice to the visual delights of Nouvian's photographs, so I suggest anyone with a remote interest in art or science should check this book out!

5 out of 5 stars The Deep   June 12, 2009
S. Carter (Auburn, N.Y. USA)
I recently ordered The Deep by Claire Nouvian. I love the book. Sometimes there is more than 1 picture of the subject from a different view point. They look a lot like fantasy creatures not anything like other sea creatures I've seen in other books. The pictures are large and full of definition. Well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Opinion   May 25, 2009

Hello,
I just wanted to congratulate everyone who worked for this book to appear, that tells us, readers, about one of the most interesting aspects in our very own universe. It is a world that makes me, still a young guy, imagine. How would it be like if I could go on a submarine down the ocean, where light can no longer penetrate, but where we can find unbelievable creatures, that remind me of the scientific movies?! Well, it is a dream that I wont probably experience, but anyway this book takes me to a different world, and gives me an impression of a paradise, in spite of the dangerous species that inhabit this strange world, and that is why I am so proud of having the book in my hands.
Because I was so interested in the deep sea, I try searching all kind of webpages, but unfortanetely I had no success in finding them, because there are only a few of them. The webpage I found that I liked the most is called seasky.org, and with the information I had from it, I prepared a presentation for my classmates, but the problem was that I only had three minutes to talk about a theme that requires much more time. It turned out to be a fantastic presentation and my teacher gave me a 20 (best grade) for it, so I am not only thanking everybody who worked for this book and the webpages for making me more informed, but also I am thanking you all for making it possible to have such a good grade in my english presentation! Hope you all continue doing such a great work like you are doing now
