Editorial Reviews:
Product Description The study of matroids is a branch of discrete mathematics with basic links to graphs, lattices, codes, transversals, and projective geometries. Matroids are of fundamental importance in combinatorial optimization and their applications extend into electrical engineering and statics. This incisive survey of matroid theory falls into two parts: the first part provides a comprehensive introduction to the basics of matroid theory while the second treats more advanced topics. The book contains over five hundred exercises and includes, for the first time in one place, short proofs for most of the subjects' major theorems. The final chapter lists sixty unsolved problems and details progress towards their solutions.

Customer Reviews: Great Book. May 17, 2005 Parag A. Namjoshi (Baltimore, MD) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is a great text on matroid theory. This book is far easier to read than other matroid book I have seen (Welsh). Second priting from 2006 fixes some of the errors in the first printing and is cheaper to boot(being a paperback).
Caveat: Amazon points to wrong book as the paperback of first edition.
Good book March 24, 2000 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
The author clearly explains the topic. My only complaint is that some of the problems are rather difficult, and there isn't a solution key.
