5 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful, well-written & very readable, good coverage of basics   November 24, 2009

Extremely helpful, well-written & very readable, good coverage of basics. Useful at graduate level for quick reference; good starting place with good references to more in-depth coverage of most individual topics.

5 out of 5 stars Readable and accessible   October 2, 2009

I require a statistics book to be something I can open somewhere in the middle, spend 30 minutes reading, and have an idea how to perform a specific type of analysis. This text fulfills my requirements, and replaces my previous favorite (Lapin) as the stat book I reach for most often. In support of one's ability to pick up reading in the middle of the book, the text is readable, the notation is pretty standard, you can usually find the definitions of the variables in any equation without looking too far back, and the examples are very helpful. Also, the book has the only section on circular statistics that I have ever found in a general statistics text. Note this is a review of the 4th edition, which I picked up used, and I don't know what changes were made in the 5th edition.

5 out of 5 stars Hands down best statistics text   August 26, 2009

As a working biologist with little formal mathematical training (and NO statistics training) I was looking for a text that had everything I needed to know about a statistical test--when to use it, when not to use it and how to use it. Zar fits the bill perfectly. I particularly appreciate that for each test he provides real world examples and then works the test out completely. Even when I've had difficulty understanding a test at first (with the ANOVA, for example), I was able to follow the example and convince myself that I had really grasped it.

Another reviewer mentioned the "pencil and paper" aspect of Zar as a negative, but I disagree. I love SPSS as much as the next person and I use it all the time, but my understanding of what test to use when and what that test is really doing come from Zar. A fantastic book!

Julien Hoffman (San Francisco, CA)
I have used this book for many years teaching, and have found it to be one of the most thorough texts available. It is perhaps too long for a first time student, but whenever one wants an unusual test, it deals with it very thoroughly. Many items in it can only be found in literature not easily availabloe to a student. Difficult issues are dealt with in depth.

5 out of 5 stars great reference book for biostats   September 20, 2008

This book was required for a graduate course in biological statistics and it's been a great help. It will be a great book to refer to for many years to come in scientific research.
