Product Description *Winner of a 1999 EdPress Distinguished Achievement Award! *What is understanding and how does it differ from knowing? What do we want students to understand and be able to do? What enduring knowledge is worth understanding? How will we know that students truly understand and can apply knowledge in a meaningful way? How can we design our courses and units to emphasize understanding and "uncoverage" rather than "coverage"? Understanding by Design explores these questions and provides practical solutions for the teacher-designer. The book opens by analyzing the logic of backward design as an alternative to coverage and activity-oriented plans. Though backward from habit, this approach brings more focus and coherence to instruction. The text proposes a multifaceted approach, with the six "facets" of understanding. The facets combine with backward design to provide a powerful, practical framework for designing curriculum, assessment, and instruction.

Good Textbook November 21, 2009 Brittany J. Mazzola (Muncie, IN) Be prepared to shift your lesson planning schema!
This book takes an entirely new approach to planning lessons and units.
It focuses on the big picture with what they call "enduring understandings."
I highly recommend this for someone who may feel like they are in a teaching rut.
I know that this book is commonly being used in schools across the midwest.
Arrived Quickly! October 28, 2009 Heather M. Ouellette I am very pleased with the quick shipment of this book. It came to me looking like it might have been opened a few times. I am happy I purchased it from Amazon!
Lesson Planning Essential September 12, 2009 Tworivers Chen 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Understanding by Design is a common sense approach to planning balanced lessons. Starting with a standards-based assessment as the foundation for a unit helps define learning goals and improves instruction. This is a teacher's reference desk "must have."
Understanding by Design August 16, 2009 M. Hanson (Washington State) Very helpful product in this day and age of standards. A lot of great information is included in this readable book. I am going to use a piece at a time, and look forward to reviewing this book regularly to help keep me focused on student learning, and not just having students do activities for activities sake. This book pairs well with "Using Technology with Classroom Instruction that Works". I recommend this book to all who know standards must be met, but students need to learn important life skills.
Perfect August 14, 2009 Victoria Aristoklis This is what I needed for my grad class. It arrived in the exact condition that was stated.
