Still looking for a good stats book April 4, 2009 W. Allender 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this book because it was required for a stats class. As one other reviewer has noted, the DVD is worthless. Mine did not even forward correctly between lessons, and I could only stomach the first couple lessons before throwing it in the trash.
The book problems are poorly explained, and sometimes Bluman just throw's an answer at you without any follow-up about how he got there.
However, the part that bothered me the most was Bluman's complete disregard for spatial and temporal information about a problem. Sometimes he would introduce temporal information in a problem statement, and then completely disregard it when taking the reader through the problem solution. Example - page 422, problem #5. Bluman performs a T-test between a known "average amount of rainfall during the summer months" and "the average amount of rainfall for 1995". He states this information up front in the problem statement, and then completely disregards the temporal contradiction when working the problem and treats the data values as being comparable. They're not; it's like comparing apples and oranges.
I learned a few tips and tricks for my TI-83 from this book, but the course instructor at the local community college gave us way better info during the class than this book did.
This was my first ever venture into stats. But, I'm going on to higher level stats after this class. Hopefully, I can find a better book along the way.

I was very happy with this book. It was brand new and arrived earlier than I had expected.
NO MathZone January 24, 2009 Philip G. Hawkins (Colorado) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If part of your classroom work involves using MathZone be aware that this version does not have the required registration card (which will cost $25 on MathZone's website). The cover does say "with MathZone", but that is apparently false.
A Poor Over-marketed Choice January 22, 2009 James P. Truesdell (NC) I used this text for 2 semesters with my freshman students in introductory statistics. That the publisher is willing to make claims they cannot back up, such as compatability with SPSS and that missing material will be included with the text they provide you, left me finally opting for anything else. Bluman has the ability to provide an excellent text as evidenced by earlier editions. This edition appears to have been a noninformed committee edition. The Poisson distribution is missing and the Minitab content is outdated along with examples that have been poorly developed for the student to use on their own. I would teach without a text rather than use this again.
JUST OK October 21, 2008 Luis Viray 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
3 Stars=Average. I need this textbook for one of my classes. It came without the Math Zone Registration code, so I contacted Amazon and they quickly processed another textbook to go out, but I needed to start my class, so I took it upon myself to buy the registration code through the Math Zone website. Amazon reimbursed me for it, which is great. But this had brought so much trouble. The second textbook came, put it aside and have forgotten about it with my busy schedule. So, recently Amazon charged me for the book, and had me go negative on my checking account! I called them and informed them of what happened. They couldn't do anything about it until they get the book back. They were willing to take care of the overdraft charges if need be. Luckily, I had enough money in my savings to counter the charge. I mailed the unopened package immediately (about a week ago) but have yet to receive the refund for it. I'm being patient, as Amazon did with me with the book. So, fair is fair. Average experience, average rating.
