Product Description Designed for the two-semester general chemistry course, Chang’s best-selling textbook continues to take a traditional approach and is often considered a student and teacher favorite. The book features a straightforward, clear writing style and proven problem-solving strategies. It continues the tradition of providing a firm foundation in chemical concepts and principles while presenting a broad range of topics in a clear, concise manner. The new edition of Chemistry continues to strike a balance between theory and application by incorporating real examples and helping students visualize the three-dimensional atomic and molecular structures that are the basis of chemical activity. An integral part of the text is to develop students' problem-solving and critical thinking skills. A hallmark of the ninth edition is the integration of many tools designed to inspire both students and instructors. The textbook is a foundation for the unparalleled, effective technology that is integrated throughout. The multimedia package for the new edition stretches students beyond the confines of the traditional textbook.

Clearly written College Text May 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Chang's 9th edition has been reviewed by the College Board as one of the approved AP Chemistry texts. The text incorporates the complete AP Chemistry curriculum
"Following the tradition of the previous eight editions, the newest Raymond Chang Chemistry is still readable and logically organized; thus it is very appropriate for AP Chemistry." -College Board Review
The newest edition has improved readability and has provided extra help in problem solving. Key equations, answers, and sample problems are shaded and set apart for easy review.
The example problems now include well-integrated strategies that clarify the calculations so that students can understand the worked out solutions. The carefully crafted strategies distill the chapter ideas into concise sentences that focus the reasoning involved in solving the example problems.
You could get a complete chemistry course by reading going over the example problem strategies and solutions.
The text has a clean flow of ideas without distracting clutter. Each new edition has honed this textbook for precision in learning. Every paragraph's meaning is clear, and each sentence is there for a reason.
Too many textbooks have become bloated with excess padding in each new edition. Chang's text kept its ranking as one of the top college textbooks by keeping current, providing excellent explanations, and staying lean through careful editing.

a very poor chemistry text November 11, 2007 3 out of 8 found this review helpful
There are many problems with this text. The order in which the concepts are taught is pedagogically unsound (and different from many established texts). But most important is that there are many errors. Clearly, fundamental chemistry is based upon physics. Dr. Chang's explanations of the underlying physics concepts contain many errors. There are some "chemistry" errors as well. One would think the errors would have been rooted out by the 9th edition. I purchased another text used at a highly respected "institute of technology" to read in addition to (in place of where possible) Dr. Chang's text. While this other text is considered more difficult, it was less difficult in the sense that I didn't have to spend time figuring out where Dr. Chang was correct and where he was not.
Good introductory text November 5, 2007 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Chang's Chemistry, 9th edition, is a well written text that is good for a freshman-level general chemistry sequence. For the most part, the text is easy to understand and does not require re-reading. Sections on thermodynamics and molecular orbital theory, however, were confusing. I would not recommend the accompanying solutions manual; it is overpriced considering it only provides answers to odd-numbered problems, which are already in the back of the text. Overall a good book, which I would recommend.
