Product Description
An engaging case-based approach to learning the diagnostic process in internal medicine Symptom to Diagnosis teaches you an evidence-based, step-by-step process for evaluating, diagnosing, and treating patients based on their clinical complaints. By applying this process you will be able to recognize specific diseases and prescribe the most effective therapy. Each chapter is built around a common patient complaint that illustrates essential concepts and provides insight into the process by which the differential diagnosis is identified. Coverage for each disease includes: - Textbook Presentation: offers a concise statement of the common or classic presentation of the particular disease
- Disease Highlights: covers the most pertinent epidemiologic and pathophysiologic information for the disease
- Evidence-Based Diagnosis: reviews the accuracy of the history, physical exam, laboratory and radiologic tests for the disease. In this unique section, the author points out the findings that help you “rule in” or “rule out” the various diseases.
- Treatment: details the basics of therapy for the disease discussed
Filled with algorithms, summary tables, and questions that direct evaluation, Symptom to Diagnosis is a true must read before your first clinical encounter.

horrible shipping experience September 28, 2009 Dream (Ilinois, USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Please do not use amazon.com freeshiping option, it is a month and I still did not get my book. I had t change the shipping option and hoping to have it soon. It is horrible, this is not a good way of doing bussiness, I am never ever going to buy anyting from Amazon.com again. I hope you all have better experience than I did. This is ridicolus. A bad bussiness mentality, saying free shiping in 5-8 days and than not sending it.. It is a lie. I am going to tell all myfriends to not use amazon.com for anything to buy any more, because they are not trustable from my point of view.
Great for Medicine Clerkship September 23, 2009 MedStudent (Baltimore) This book was so useful I actually enjoyed reading it! Chapters are organized by chief complaint presented in case format. A differential is created from the H&P. The etiology and epidemiology of the most likely, active alternatives and must-not-miss diseases are discussed. A series of tests and studies are then presented and their usefulness assessed for differentiating between the diagnoses in question.
The format of presenting information this way is extremely logical and matches the thinking process of a trained clinician when assessing a new patient. Too often, textbooks go on flights of academic fancy that either present too much or irrelevant information to the actual practice of medicine. Symptoms to Diagnosis was created with the needs of med students in mind and is thus extremely useful and an absolute pleasure to read.

Good learning tool September 20, 2009 Jacob A. Panici (Zion, IL USA) Excellent book to help student doctors work through diagnosis. Unlike most textbooks, listing diseases and the symptoms associated with them; this texts begins with what you'll see in the clinic (headache, abdominal pain, trouble breathing, etc.) and helps you walk through a multitude of differential diagnosis to correctly make a definitive one.
Excellent Diagnostic Training! June 24, 2009 Dr. Lance C. Durrett This is one of the most important works on diagnosis that I have ever read. Most books and classes on diagnosis teach information about diseases. From the information learned about diseases, a physician is then supposed to form a conclusion about the diagnosis. This approach is different. It teaches the diagnostic process and provides a logical and evidence based approach to arriving at the correct diagnosis. It is complete with up to date lab tests and current clinical strategies.
Each chapter in this book is like a separate seminar on the given topic. I have been to many seminars on diagnosis and when I think how much was spent on seminar fees and travel, I find the book to be an extremely good value.
I recommend this book for any doctor, nurse or paraprofessional that wants to sharpen diagnostic skills.
Great for PBL style courses April 11, 2009 Meghie 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this book while in PA school and have used it as a great refresher/reference during my first year in practice. It walks through case studies, discussing key questions for the differential diagnosis and things not to be missed. I'll admit to getting the most out of every chapter when reading "actively" outloud - though I tend to learn better using that style as well. Overall the cases tend to stick with you and are presented in a logical, informative manner.
The only slight negative is that 5 of the chapters are on-line, meaning you have to download them from the website and they aren't included in the book itself. Kind of a bummer. But still very informative, dermatology and health maintence especially.
It's really a great book for any clinical student, and I'm more than willing to recommend it to any student. It's well worth the price
