Great book... would like more pictures September 2, 2009 Christopher White (Arcata, CA) I guess you can never have it both ways... comprehensive and full of pictures... anyways, I love the book so far, only flaw is I wish they had key lab values to go along with certain diseases so you could correlate your exam with a cellular disease mechanism... but I guess thats what med school is for... overall great book... A perfect addition to bates... I have only just purchased it so I do not know how many inaccuracies, but from the format I assume the authors are thoughtful and dedicated and errors will be far and few between. Enjoy!
Mosby's is Better April 8, 2009 Jane Reader (Albemarle, NC United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book was required for my physical assessment course, but after comparing it to Mosby's Physical Exam, I never opened it again. Mosby's provides more comprehensive information in an easier to read format.
DeGowins is the end all be all of physical exam March 27, 2009 An avid fan 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After using Jarvis and Bates in college, I happened to find a recommendation to use DeGowins instead. Degowins, despite its small size, packs a large punch compared to the usual fare. Its about the size of a nursing drug guide and can be easily stored away for clinical reference in your bag. It contains descriptions and drawn graphics of procedures and possible differential diagnosis for conditions. The index is thorough. Overall, its a great purchase for nursing and NP students.
"Navicular vs. scaphoid" bone November 11, 2008 Mary Vincent, PA-C (Kake, AK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I wanted to comment on the book in general (excellent!) and a question about the use of "scaphoid" versus "navicular" for the carpal bone. I also wondered why both terms were used. "Scaphoid" comes from the Greek word for boat or skiff, "skaphe". "Navicular comes from the Latin word for boat, "navicula." I suggest that students use a good medical dictionary to look up confusing words. Dorland's Medical Dictionary is great for discovering the origins of these words!
Great resource! October 28, 2007 Med Student (Gainesville, FL) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a great book for learning more about the physical exam. In addition to the basic exam, there are all kinds of special signs and tests. The author explains the pathophysiology and differential diagnosis for all of these. Overall, very helpful as a reference or to read straight through.
