Schaum's Outline of College Algebra August 7, 2009 olbnancy (Baltimore, MD USA) The service was excellent and the book in very good condition considering that it is a workbook. It has been tremendously helpful in learning Algebra and I would not be doing as well in the class if it were not for this book.
ain't no exercises! June 19, 2009 Caraculiambro (La Mancha and environs) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is NOT the much more popular Schaum's Outline of College Algebra. This is a smaller version: Schaum's EASY outline. I don't think anybody will get much use out of it.
It's just lists of rules and definitions! There are no exercises! They'll tell you, for example, what the rational root theorem is and give a demonstration, but there are no problems you can work for yourself to get the rule into your blood. And of course there are no answers in the back of the book for self-studiers! Answers for what? There are no exercises!
This reminds me of a Latin grammar I have: nothing but rules and definitions without any practice.
Hard to see who could use this. A professor, assigning it as a supplementary text in a college algebra class?
Well, even for that purpose it'd be a waste of time. A real course in college algebra is going to have to go a lot deeper than this manual does.
Note that Schaum's Outline of College Algebra, 3/e (Schaum's Outline Series) (v. 3), by the same author, DOES have plenty of exercises with answers at the back (and not just the odd-numbered ones).
Disappointed November 30, 2008 Peanut Gallery (Arlington, VA) I'm disappointed. I read over reviews for a number of similar study guides and settled on Schaum's Outline of College Algebra in hopes of quickly reviewing before a placement test I need to take. While the book covers a lot, and I do mean a lot, of different topics, there are a lot, and I do mean a lot, of typos and inconsistencies in the set up of the text chapter to chapter. The typos in the steps to solving a problem are the worst. And sometimes, in the "Supplementary Problems" section, instead of leaving all of the answers to the end, they put them right next the the questions. Annoying. So far, I've skipped one chapter all together because the text made absolutly no sense. Maybe they're just teaching things differently these days (I doubt it). Overall, I'm disappointed and will try to find another study guide asap.

Seems a lil complicated. I think I should have ordered one for regular algebra first!
A good choice for a refresher or supplement, unsuitable as a main text for the algebra novice April 17, 2008 Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States(cashbacher@yahoo.com)) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
College algebra, often taught in high schools so the name is a misnomer, is a course that nearly all students must get through. The abstractions of replacing numbers by letters and then rearranging them are thought processes that some find easy and others find very hard. Yet, it is a mental exercise that serves you well, it prepares the mind for problem-solving situations that occur throughout life.
This book, a collection of worked exercises in what is called college algebra, starts at the very beginning and in short increments works through all of the topics found in college algebra courses. Problems are solved in several ways, each step presented in detail.
Like all the other Schaum's books, this book is an excellent choice for a quick review of the material. People who want to learn college algebra generally will not be able to use it as a text. For them, the best use is as something to supplement their main text or manner of learning.
