Restore your digestion and gut health! November 30, 2009 J. Saffell (Northern California) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Lipski's book DIGESTIVE WELLNESS, explains digestion exceptionally well for the lay person, and gives concrete, do-able directions for restoring digestive function for a host of gut problems. Maybe it ties it all together for me because I've already read a lot on the subject of digestion, but it does seem like this particular book really empowers the individual in restoring their own optimal gut function no matter what the originating cause.
If you were only going to get one book on the subject of digestion, DIGESTIVE WELLNESS should be the book. It covers both the specific 'diagnosed' gut issues as well as the non-specific. It gives the conventional tests as well as the 'functional medicine' tests that are often more informative. It suggests specific diet change recommendations and reasonable short-term supplement changes that aid healing for specific problems. My FNP saw my copy and will be ordering her own copy ASAP - (and yes, she has gut issues, too, that haven't been resolved by modern medicine).
Other very useful books on digestion are: Why Stomach Acid is Good for You: Natural Relief from Heartburn, Indigestion, Reflux and GERD by Jonathan Wright, MD, Healthy Digestion the Natural Way: Preventing and Healing Heartburn, Constipation, Gas, Diarrhea, Inflammatory Bowel and Gallbladder Diseases, Ulcers, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and More by D. Lindsey Berkson, Gut Solutions: Natural Solutions to Your Digestive Problems" by Brenda Watson, ND and Leonard Smith, MD. Each of these other books have excellent features, But if I could only buy one book, I'd start with Lipski's DIGESTIVE WELLNESS.

Good, but could be much better January 11, 2009 Ypatios Varelas (Greece) 11 out of 14 found this review helpful
This book tries to present a huge amount of information in a way that most people can understand, along with solutions and remedies. I have to say that some elements of this book deserve five stars, however I am kind of dissapointed with some parts, like chapters 10 and 11 which should be the most well written but can be confusing instead. I mean, trying by yourself to follow the advice given for many problems can be very difficult, since many times there is no clear way of what to try first, what to try depending on other factors and conditions or what how long to try a solution.
I guess there is good intention but the result is not so good in terms of practical applications and I'm not sure it can REALLY help many people (though it succeeds in raising optimism and hope for people suffering from gastrointestinal problems).
