3 out of 5 stars Previous character appearances...   November 22, 2009
Cali (Ohio, USA)
I'd have to say reading over the reviews that mine tends to agree mostly with "Sooz." She sums it up quite nicely.

There is one thing I'd like to add: why, why, WHY, when you have enjoyed characters from previous books who had their own story - must you get all excited to hear/see names pop up in a current story - ONLY to be very let down because the extent of their 'appearance' is nothing more than meeting for a meal or engaging in a fight? In other words, they're just in the background. Couldn't they have a small scene, event, SOMETHING, to make you love seeing them again and remember the joy you had reading *their* story??

Tony, Gervase, Wolverstone...they were just - there. Some of the Cynster's at least touched a bit more personally on recalling the fun loving scoundrel's they are but still not what I would have expected from Ms. Laurens.

I love the military aspects and details but Del and Deliah as stated by someone else come off more as secondary characters. Romance? I didn't feel it. It was sex plain and simple!

And the confrontations (because I hardly call them attacks) very boring, come off as 'filler' material with the exception of the actual first confrontation with the cultists on the way to Wolverstone's.

Yes, I will finish the series, but as much as I LOVE the Cynster's and Bastian's, (and now the Black Cobra Quartet) I am more than ready to put this huge family [and friends] to bed.

Look at it this way: you're eating something you absolutely love! Yet, the more you eat the less it tastes wonderful and the worse you start to feel. A lot of people have mentioned Ms. Laurens using a "template," "carbon copy," and "pattern." I think it's obvious this pattern has been well used and enough!

We love you Ms. Laurens! But how about a new pattern?

The Untamed Bride is as good as the best of the Cynster series.I am looking forward to the rest of the Black Cobra Quartet. I felt the characters were interesting and very true to the period of time that was being written about. In addition, the geographical details, as well as meteorological ones, were spot on. Well worth the price of purchase and investment of time in reading!

5 out of 5 stars Stephanie Laurens does it again!   November 5, 2009

I love Stephanie Laurens' Cynster and Bastion Club series (some books more than others), and I loved the first book in the new Black Cobra Quartet! All the elements of a great Laurens Regency were present: a strong heroine, honorable hero, and the intrigue of a solid plot. I'm sorry I finished reading it so quickly, and cannot wait to get my hands on the next in February! Great read - I definitely recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE LOVE LOVED IT!   November 4, 2009

I loved the first book in Stephanie Laurens new quartet. I have read A LOT of regency romance novels, including almost all of Ms. Laurens, and this is the first series I have seen that includes four stories, simultaneously unfolding, with such a unique and suspenseful plotline. It honestly had me thinking about a movie script or something, but would be difficult with all the different character stories. Maybe I love it so much because I have read all the previous books and it was great to see some familiar and beloved couples interacting all together. I think this is the best she has done in a long time. Reading this made me remember the first Cynster story I encountered "All about Passion", and how I skipped class in college to finish, then immediately went and checked out all the preceding Cynster books and eagerly awaited every new one. Then came the Bastion Club, which I mostly loved. I honestly don't know how other reviewers found it boring. I couldn't wait to finish it, and can't wait until february to read the next. I didn't consider all the pages in the back to be advertising for previous novels. I was actually glad to sit and catch up on all the other couples, and remind myself of their stories. The family tree helped as well. Anyone who reads this book and loved it, but hasn't read the previous will appreciate the guide, and will probably run right out and check out all of them from the library! Ms. Laurens is too prolific to buy all the previous ones at once! I do wish it wouldn't be so long between novels. I'm sure she probably has all of them finished, and love to be her reviewer and get to read them right away! I was hoping since it culminates at Christmas then they would all be out by Dec. 25th, but it seems more likely it will be Dec. 2010! I won't say anything about the storyline itself, since I hate spoilers but I totally recommend the book, and can only hope the next three live up to expectations.

2 out of 5 stars too much dull plot, not enough love story   November 3, 2009

This book did nothing for me. I has lots of setup for Ms. Laurens' new series and none of it interested me. The love story was bland and the classic "he doesn't really love me" plot seemed unusually thin. The writing was, especially in the scenes between the hero and heroine, annoying. Lots of short sentences. Like this. Heavyhandedly showing how he feels. I have loved some of Ms. Laurens' other books. This one, however, I have put down with some measure of relief and can't imagine ever wanting to read it again.
