Product Description An estimated 5 million Americans suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and live diminished lives in which they are compelled to obsess about something or to repeat a similar task over and over. Traditionally, OCD has been treated with Prozac or similar drugs. The problem with medication, aside from its cost, is that 30 percent of people treated don't respond to it, and when the pills stop, the symptoms invariably return. In Brain Lock, Jeffrey M. Schwartz presents a simple four-step method for overcoming OCD that is so effective, it's now used in academic treatment centers throughout the world. Proven by brain-imaging tests to actually alter the brain's chemistry, this method doesn't rely on psychopharmaceuticals. Instead, patients use cognitive self-therapy and behavior modification to develop new patterns of response to their obsessions. In essence, they use the mind to fix the brain. Using the real-life stories of actual patients, Brain Lock explains this revolutionary method and provides readers with the inspiration and tools to free themselves from their psychic prisons and regain control of their lives.

Pamphlet in book form March 2, 2010 M. Orozco I was very disappointed with this book. It is extremely repetitive and poorly written. I feel like the information provided could have easily been covered in a tri-fold pamphlet. The author tries to over simplify the subject, and although many stories of patients are given, they are similar stories. I am newly diagnosed with OCD and have only been researching it for a short period of time. This book did not offer me any information I had not already found out on my own by simple internet searches. His technique he offers for over coming OCD has done very little if anything for me personally.
Not what I thought... February 21, 2010 Marie (California, USA) Someone had suggested this book to me in 2006 when my OCD was clearly taking over my life. So my boyfriend sat down with me for an hour everyday and we read the book together.
It explains OCD and steps you to "control" it... but this book just didn't work for me.
At last! Drug-free help for OCD February 18, 2010 cate I am so grateful for this book. I suffered terribly from a form of OCD sometimes called "responsibility" OCD - not the fear of coming in contact with germs, but the fear of spreading germs to others. Knowing that all drugs have side effects and often unknown long-term effects (sometimes worse than the OCD itself), I did not choose to use them. When I found this book and began reading, I knew that I had found my answer (finally). Perhaps this book won't work for absolutely everyone, but no book that I know of does. I highly recommend giving it a try, though. It's made a remarkable change in my life. And I hope, from the bottom of my heart, that it works for you if you're going through the OCD struggle. Thank you, Dr. Schwartz for writing this book and, most of all, for your understanding.
Great tool for overcoming OCD ! December 4, 2009 Paula M. Kirklin (Kalamazoo, Mi.,USA) I have mild O.C.D. that hampers my happiness, mostly. My therapist loaned me a copy of the book: "Brain Lock". It's easy to read and follow. I bought myself a copy so I don't forget the simple tools I had read about. It's about retraining your brain and it does work!
Live with OCD December 4, 2009 MZ (Novinger, MO United States) This is probably the best book out there specific to the anxiety disorder known as OCD. It isn't a book with a life-changing philosophy for general anxiety, but it does outline a specific program for working around OCD. The title does contain some false advertising. If you have a serious case of OCD, you will likely never be "free" of it. However, you can cope with it and still lead a meaningful life. Brain Lock will help you to do just that with it's "Four Rs" approach. The author includes a significant number of personal accounts from his patients, which helps to put a real face on the disorder. In other words, you know it's more than just a theory. It actually works for some people. There are a few references to God in this book, but they are not specific to any religion. Just replace the word "God" with "Universe" or "Higher Power" and anyone can work with it. I wish you the best of luck.
