Product Description
This is a prayer for a blueberry girl . . . A much-loved baby grows into a young woman: brave, adventurous, and lucky. Exploring, traveling, bathed in sunshine, surrounded by the wonders of the world. What every new parent or parent-to-be dreams of for her child, what every girl dreams of for herself. Let me go places that we've never been, trust and delight in her youth. Nationally bestselling author Neil Gaiman wrote Blueberry Girl for a friend who was about to become the mother of a little girl. Here, he and beloved illustrator Charles Vess turn this deeply personal wish for a new daughter into a book that celebrates the glory of growing up: a perfect gift for girls embarking on all the journeys of life, for their parents, and for everyone who loves them. Give her all these and a little bit more, gifts for a blueberry girl.

Well spoken and beautifully illustrated November 16, 2009 L. Adams (IN) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a wonderful gem. Neil Gaiman's poetry flows beautifully and Charles Vess's illustrations are fantastic. "This is a prayer for a blueberry girl..." is the beginning, and it is one of the best new baby blessings I have ever found. Do not let a potential giftee's age deter you, though--this book has been well received by new baby's parents, by little girls, by girlfriends, and mothers themselves. I wish EVERY little girl could have a copy of this on her shelf, and believe it when it's read to her.
Blueberry Blessings For Your Wild Child November 12, 2009 Lichen (Portland, OR) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Blueberry Blessings For Your Wild Child, a review of Neil Gaiman and
Charles Vess' Blueberry Girl, by Lichen June
Lovers of art and lovers of whimsy,
lovers of words, the magical kind
this is a review for a Blueberry Girl
a tale from Neil Gaiman's mind
A book filled with prayers and hopes for a child
to guide and watch over her play
to protect her from troubles and woes of all kinds
add kindness and delight to her days
Words can be blessings, words can be curses
when spoken with the firmness of truth
Neil's words have intent, filled with love and bright purpose
to protect a child's trust and her youth
Lovers of dreams, lovers of nature
lovers of mysteries told
this is a rave for a Blueberry Girl
for teaching her to be brave and be bold
The pictures are beautiful, vibrant and strong
watercolor to dazzle the eyes
the verses enchant the young and the old
at turns graceful and really quite wise
Buy this book for your loved ones to grow on
to imagine, share and inspire
to teach the dance of great joys and deep sorrows
the balance her life will require
Lovers of sunlight, lovers of starlight
lovers of "shadows that fall"
this is rejoicing that Blueberry Girl
is here to be enjoyed by us all
Thanks Charles Vess for your love of the natural
Neil Gaiman for your love of this child
you've both interwoven vast talents to create
a present most wondrous and wild
Truth is a gift we must find for ourselves
"precious and rare as a pearl"
but it comes just a little bit easier now
with a gift like the Blueberry Girl

My kids love it November 2, 2009 W. Harman (Seattle, WA USA) Both of my kids (girl 5, boy 3) really enjoy both hearing this book at night and reading it themselves the next day. There is a certain rhythmic quality to the narrative I've found sleep-inducing at bedtime. Beautifully illustrated throughout.
Background info July 30, 2009 Matthew David Ritchey (Hollywood, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm surprsied and pleased that this was made into a picture book. I love Vess and Gaiman, of course. And I suppose it makes perfect sense that this would be a great gift/picture book for young girls or expectant mothers..... it was originally written for Neil's longtime friend Tori Amos who was having a baby that she called her "Little Blueberry" when she was pregnant. Neil read it during his poetry tours and always asked anybody bootlegging his readings to please stop for this particular poem, as it was very personal and a gift.... interesting that it's now become a mass market kids book...
Regardless, it's once again brilliant work from a great team.
Lovely... July 16, 2009 Evil Voodoo Celt (Arlington, VA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Gaiman's poem is truly a blessing- a set of wishes for a girl, wishes for a full and wonderful life (but allowing for sorrow as well as joy). Vess's artwork is lovely and magical- he always works so well with Gaiman, and this is no exception. Every little girl should have this on their shelf... I only wish there was something equivalent for little boys. Maybe some day...
