Product Description
At 10.2 ounces, Kindle is lighter than a typical paperback and as thin as most magazines. Barely a third of an inch in profile, you'll find Kindle fits perfectly in your hands. Kindle is as easy to hold and use as a book. We designed it with long-form reading in mind. When reading for long periods of time, people naturally shift positions and often like to read with one hand. Kindle's page-turning buttons are located on both sides, allowing you to read and turn pages comfortably with one hand from any position. The page-turn buttons now flex inward to prevent any accidental page turns when picking up or handling Kindle. Kindle has a new easy-to-use 5-way controller, enabling precise on-screen navigation for selecting text to highlight or looking up words. Kindle is completely wireless and ready to use right out of the box--no setup, no cables, no computer required. With Kindle's 25% longer battery life, you can read on a single charge for up to 4 days with wireless on. Turn wireless off and read for up to 2 weeks. Battery life will vary based on wireless usage, such as shopping the Kindle Store and downloading content. In low coverage areas or in 1xRTT only coverage, wireless usage will consume battery power more quickly. Whispernet utilizes Amazon's optimized technology plus Sprint's national high-speed (3G) data network to enable you to wirelessly search, discover, and download content on the go. Your books and periodicals are delivered via Whispernet in less than 60 seconds. And unlike WiFi, you never have to hunt for a hotspot.

This is the best product I ever bought. I really enjoy being able to get the books wirelessly and it is so easy to do. It is better than having to lug around books all the time. So great that it will be a christmas gift for my mother, an avid reader.

5 out of 5 stars Now I like reading   November 21, 2009

I wasn't a big reader before I bought it, for some reason now I enjoy reading. It is just an excellent product, a little bit slow though, specially when moving the cursor.

5 out of 5 stars Kindle 2 is Awesome!   November 21, 2009

I have had my Kindle 2 for about a month now and I absolutly love it!

Here are some pros that I really liked about the device;
1. The screen looks just like the page of an actual book!
2. No more scanning book store for your books! You can even download the first chapter of a book for free to sample it.
3. Books you buy on the Kindle are a lot cheaper than they would be in print; you can save money and trees!
4. The internet access is free and it works much faster than the kindle one had.
5. The built in dictionary is amazing, all you have to do is use the 5 way controler to scroll up net to the word and it will give you the definition. You can also search the dictionary for definitions.
6. Lightweight and thin design make it easy to carry. You would think thank this would make it more breakable, but the back is reinforced with metal, making it surprisingly durable.
7. Battery life is excellent I can read for a week or two(and I read A LOT) with out having to recharge it.
8. You can take notes and highlight sections making it easy to come back to and it certain books you can skip by chapter by pressing the left or right controls.
9. you can also delete books of your kindle, which will be saved to your amazon acount and then re-download them through archived books.

Finally here are the few cons I found;
1. Every once and a while a book will not download about te or more minutes after you ordered it, even if you have superb internet service.
2. Sine the screen is not backlighted you must use a book light when reading in darker spaces.
3. Not all books allow you to flip chapters using the 5 way contoler, and not all books contain a table of contents.
4. Not all internet files can be opened on the kindle.

As you can see there are many more pros than cons to this device! I highly suggest it to anyone who is an avid reader! hope this review helped!
Smile :)

2 out of 5 stars Nice hardware, crippled by geo-restrictions   November 21, 2009

Hi everyone,

I am a lontime amazon customer and only stopped ordering books regularly when ebooks started to go mainstream. I then bought ebooks online at various sources, mainly in mobipocket format. When amazon announced the Kindle ebook reader I was in heaven...at least until I heard that it was going to be a US exclusive release. I waited patiently, and finally the Kindle 2 was made available internationally.
I ordered one right away and it got delivered witht he usual swiftness I have come to love from amazon.

The hardware is very nice, the look and feel, the UI and the Whispernet connectivity.
Sadly, the main selling point of the device, namely the large ebook database of Amazon, is still something for US residents only. Strangely, many of my favourite authors are not US based but I still can't buy their books here. I can get the paperback at Amazon.de, I can buy the ebook in mobipocket or ePub format at some other store, but the Kindle store just gives me the "Not available in Europe" message.
So far all my favourite authors are amongst those "restricted" to the US.
Terry Pratchett, Robert Jordan, Peter F. Hamiltorn, Michael Scott, Douglas Adams and many others. This makes the device all but useless to me because Amazon locks me to the Amazon.com store, so I can't get my content elsewhere and Amazon.com refuses to sell me books from the Authros I love most. If this does not change soon I will have to sell my 280 paperweight on ebay and go back to using my Sony.
It is sad that the only truly global marketplace, the internet, is being regionalized and restricted in this way and in the end the only place that will profit from this is the darknet that is more than willing to give stuff to anyone...for free. Since this does not net any money for authors, publishers or amazon I doubt whether it is in anybody's best interest to drive customers there...

5 out of 5 stars Portable, convenient, cost-effective library for Avid Readers.   November 21, 2009
Owned and Loved by Schnauzers (Someplace, USA)
I bought this Kindle DX as a means to save money and organize our books - and it is working.

My husband and I are both avid readers. DOWN-SIZED avid readers. We are in our 60s, and we have moved to a smaller house, but our reading habits did not become smaller with the house!

The Kindle DX allows us to keep on reading; and we won't have to shell out time and money for lumber to make more bookcases in the basement, in order to house an ever-increasing library of paper back books. And, should we move to another geographic locale, which seems quite likely now, we won't have to box and ship our paper backs. Or pay anyone else to ship our paperbacks - because there won't be any more paperbacks in this house.

I save money, now, every week because we don't have to go to Walmart to get the latest best-selling paperbacks. I have never been able to go to a Walmart and just come out with the one item I went in the store to get - I always wind up with about $20-$50 additional merchandize in my bag! With the Kindle - the book is all I get, and then I can't wait to get to the living room and begin reading the book. Convenience!

When we travel in our recreational vehicle (5th wheel trailer) - we don't have to overload our limited living quarters with heavy paperbacks. Our Kindle can store enough new books to get us through the two or three week trip!

Our senior eyes, too, have their problems, and the DX with its large text size, helps us with that issue.

Thinking ahead, and trying to be realistic about life, if either one of us winds up in the hospital for a day or two or more, the Kindle can deliver our newspaper, as soon as it is turned on in the morning. Plus, the Kindle can provide a large library of spare books to read, so time will pass quickly, in the event we have any hospitalization events in this house.

For senior citizens, particularly, I recommend this Kindle DX. You can get your morning paper without even going out your front door; you can get your favorite news magazine (Time or Newsweek, etc.) delivered weekly, and you can buy paper backs from Amazon, without having to get in the car, use gas, drive to the store, buy a book, and whatever else is at the checkout counter! I like to read my favorites in letter format screen; my husband prefers the landscape format screen.

Your "book" storage can be in your Amazon.com account, or on your Kindle directly. No more digging through stacks of uncatalogued paperbacks in the basement when you want to re-read a favorite.

For me, the Kindle DX is turning out to be the most convenient "don't leave home without it" tool that I own! When I head out the door to a doctor's appointment, my books and magazines come with me, on the Kindle. Having a Kindle simply provides me with a larger portable library, plus more categories of reading (magazines, newspapers, books), all housed in a small tablet-sized format, easily carried in my purse.

I highly recommend the Kindle DX. If you are a constant reader, going through a book or more a week, have a need to cut back on spending, and want a neater house, plus a better organized "library" of books, in a more "portable" format, - then I recommend the Kindle DX to you.
