Product Description In this funny and insightful book, Gary Rubinstein relives his own truly disastrous first year of teaching. He begins his teaching career armed only with idealism and romantic visions of teaching - and absolutely no classroom management skills. By his fourth year, however, he is named his school's "Teacher of the Year." As Rubinstein details his transformation from incompetent to successful teacher, he shows what works and what doesn't work when managing a classroom.

Refreshing, Humorous, Quick Read July 6, 2009 M. Lajimodiere (Denver, CO) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Gary did an awesome job writing this book--it's quick, to-the-point, and really funny. In it he offers some actual strategies you could use in your classroom tomorrow. I've taught for ten years and found it refreshing and entertaining. It gave me some ideas. It would be even better for new teachers. He writes very honestly about things he did as a teacher that did NOT work for classroom management. So he explains very well what doesn't work and what does; however, he does it from the perspective that teachers are different and going to have different classroom management styles that work for them. So he doesn't say, "You have to do it exactly like this..." He says, "Keep this in mind..." One of my favorite sections of the book is the last chapter in which he compiled classroom management advice from several colleagues with different teaching styles. He pointed out that although they are very different as teachers, there were many common themes in their advice. Also, he wrote from the perspective of a secondary teacher, but I'm an elementary teacher and found it to be just as helpful.
Don't let the fact that this book is 10 years old prevent you from buying it. Honestly, it seems like it could've been written yesterday. Everything he talked about is relevant to today's teachers.
Read this as "research" and fell out of my seat laughing. June 24, 2009 Roxanna Elden (USA) In preparation for my own book I read almost everything available to new teachers. This was my favorite, hands down. Rubinstein is completely honest about the mistakes he made his first year, plus their brutal consequences. Any teacher who has faced an out-of-control class will relate to the moments Rubenstein captures in this book: Tragic at the time. Hilarious looking back.
Reluctant Disciplinarian February 2, 2009 Rachel Couling A very useful book offering some good ideas about maintaining good behaviour in the classroom setting.
Fun to read but no real help. December 13, 2008 S. Leach (Missouri City, TX, USA) 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I was looking for some help in managing some serious behavior issues in my classroom. This book didn't offer anything new or helpful.
Entertaining, but not for experienced teachers September 10, 2008 Michelle R. Moyer (Minnesota, United States) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book was an entertaining read, I will admit, but I was disappointed by it. When I was a first-year teacher, I probably would have found this a useful book (though there were other books that I found much *more* useful), but as an experienced teacher, I found nothing in it that I didn't already know. If you've made it past your first few years of teaching, it's a waste of money.
